Rebuilding damaged teeth with modern composites

Composite restoration is a relatively straightforward method of restoring to health, a damaged tooth. It does however, require a high level of skill which we at Wickham Dental pride ourselves on.

The composite use in the restoration of teeth is made from particles of glass which are combined with a resin to bind it. This ensures that the material is both relatively strong and flexible to use. This is also a very cost effective method as the restoration is done in-house and does not require any outsourcing to a dental laboratory. This composite mixture can be used to replace amalgam which is especially useful for those patients who suspect they are sensitive to the mercury used in amalgam fillings. As well as being used for reconstructive purposes, this composite material can also be used to aesthetically improve the appearance of the more visible front teeth, whether to repair cracks and chips or simply to improve the coloring of the teeth.

To restore a tooth cavity with composite takes approximately one hour; this will vary, naturally, according to the extent of the restoration. Once the cavity is prepared, the composite will be made to match the colour and shade of the tooth. It is then placed into the cavity in small amounts with each portion being hardened with a special light  before the next one is put in. This process continues until the cavity has been filled. Once this has been done, the patient will be left with a tooth that is almost indistinguishable from a regular tooth.

Whilst in its early days, composite had a reputation for lacking in strength, dental research has significantly improved its strength and longevity and it can now be used in a much wider range of circumstances than previously. If our dentist feels that a composite filling is not appropriate for your individual case, alternatives will be discussed with you to give you the best possible result.
